A concert by American R&B singer Beyonce Knowles in Istanbul has been cancelled out of respect for 12 soldiers killed in a Kurdish rebel attack, a football club that was organising the event said on its website.
Beyonce was to give a concert in Istanbul on Wednesday night, as part of her world tour. The Turkey leg of her show was being organised by soccer club Fenerbahce to mark its 100th anniversary.
"We share our nation's grief," the Fenerbahce website said. "We are cancelling our 100th anniversary concert."
"It was not possible for (the concert) to be held in such an atmosphere," the website quoted Ali Koc, the club's vice president as saying.
The soldiers were killed on Sunday in an ambush by separatist Kurdish rebels.
Beyonce Knowles began her world tour in front of an audience of 5,000 adoring and hysterical fans in Ethiopia, a country usually unimpressed by Western music.
The 26-year-old Texan singer gave a spirited two-hour performance in the Ethiopian capital, to the delight of her fans, as part of the country's year-long celebration of its 2,000th year, according to its archaic calendar.
