Örebro demoted because of debts
Örebro SK have been relegated from Sweden's Allsvenskan because of their continuing financial troubles. The Swedish Elite Licensing Committee today confirmed the club's demotion to the second tier and ruled that Assyriska FF would take their place.
In the red
Örebro have struggled financially since the introduction of the licence scheme in 2002 and have been in the red ever since. The club presented an action plan ahead of this season, detailing how they intended to improve their situation but this was not accepted. Örebro were then asked to disclose further details of their finances and after scrutinising the club's books, the licensing committee has found that they still have debts of over €600,000.
Right to appeal
Örebro have the right to appeal and are expected to do so. If their appeal is accepted, it could be in December that a final decision is made on the club's future. Örebro's director of sports, Peter Johansson, said: "It's hard for me to say anything as I haven't seen what the committee has built its decision on, but of course it's a gigantic blow to us." Assyriska, who are poised to benefit from the ruling, lost a promotion play-off against Örgryte IS.
IFK appoint Erlandsen
Meanwhile, after losing the Swedish Cup final to Djurgårdens IF on Saturday, IFK Göteborg today confirmed the appointment of Norwegian Arne Erlandsen as their new coach. The former Lillestrøm SK trainer has signed a two-year contract and replaces Bo Johansson at the helm of the Gothenburg club, who finished the season in third place.
